Professional Skills & Career Path
After graduation, I would like to find a stable job to cover my daily expenses. At the same time, I will continue to create my artwork, choose a studio space and try to apply for funding and participate more in international art prizes. In my spare time, I will also participate in various exhibitions, meet curators, investors, and artists and find opportunities that suit me. In this era of information, I need to use multiple platforms to promote my works and concepts to let more people see the art pieces.
Materials & Laser Cut
In the Urban Depression series, I experimented with a variety of materials with the support of the UAL workshops. In Unit 2, I worked with Aluminium to bring out the sense of steel and concrete in urban buildings. Aluminium is also the lightest metal I could find and is suitable for use as a laser cut. This practical experience has given me a better understanding of materials. At the same time, I learnt how to draw in Adobe Illustrator and how to cut aluminium sheets. In addition to Aluminium, I also tried cutting wood panels. In Unit 1, I cut all the wooden boards with a chainsaw and then sanded them with sandpaper. The chainsaw was rugged for me to handle, making it difficult to get the detailing result, and some of the delicate shapes could not achieve. After learning how to use AI before, in the following Unit 3, I chose to cut the boards with a laser cut. In this way, achieving a delicate effect and having smooth curves was possible. Laser Cut on the wooden panel was a very successful experiment, and in future, I can make these portraits cut infinitely larger or make them very, very small and delicate. The exploration of materials has been essential to my artistic career. At the same time, it has provided the basis for the sustainable development of my subsequent works.
Exhibit the Works
Through two major exhibitions, some curatorial skills have been learned in setting up the exhibition. Firstly, we need to collect, organise and sort out what is to be shown. In some small group shows, artists need to understand the exhibition's theme and submit artwork consistent with the title. If the art pieces have already been decided, then we need to refine them according to the content of most works to determine the theme of this exhibition. Next, space allocates according to the pieces. There are many factors to consider, such as the colour of the work, topic, display media, the type of space required, and other factors to be considered. There needs to be a specific connection and logic between the works. It is also essential to consider how the creative process of the layout is introduced, how the content of core ideas is dissected, and how the curator forms a coherent expression of the content and key points of the exhibition. For example, what is the concept of this arrangement? Why do I need to arrange it this way? How do I explain my proposal to the audience?
Over the past year, my work has been exhibited in various galleries and spaces. For each piece of artwork, there is a way of showing it that suits them. Each area brings a different feeling to the viewer. At the same time, through the increase in the number of exhibitions, I have become more aware of how to speak briefly and clearly to audiences about my creative ideas.
Pricing My Works
For pricing my works, I have to consider the cost of the materials used, such as Aluminium and wood board. In the beginning, my pieces have a small market value. The pricing will gradually increase as the works are exhibited and more visible.
